Teacher Education at Northern prepares students to become teachers who thrive in multicultural and multilingual settings. We provide theoretical foundations and practical applications that encourage students to think creatively and critically. The programs are designed to support and address the Yazzie/Martinez findings. All education coursework is delivered in an online format by certified faculty.

The Bachelor of Arts programs in Early Childhood Education (ECE) and Elementary Education (ELEM); and the Alternative Licensure Programs (ALP) in Elementary, Secondary and Special Education are accredited by the New Mexico Public Education Department (Spring 2022) and by the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) in (April 2024).

Teacher Residency Program

The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) is enhancing teacher preparation to address staffing shortages by increasing diversity, strengthening clinical practice, and addressing educational inequities from the Yazzie/Martinez case. Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) partners with NMPED to support teacher residency candidates through a structured two-semester placement with a master teacher, progressively building classroom responsibilities to ensure candidates are well-prepared for their roles.
