Bilingual Education and TESOL

Northern's Bilingual Education and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program offers quality undergraduate and postgraduate courses that capitalize on the unique linguistic skills and culture of our community.

Students conduct research and study theory, pedagogy, and curriculum development in bilingualism and second language development.

We encourage students to explore bilingual education issues across the curriculum. Courses address social, political, cultural and linguistic contexts that affect language minority students, schools and communities. Faculty in this program are committed to educational equity, cultural and linguistic rights, and social justice for these communities.

Are you a dual Spanish/English speaker? Do you have an English learner in your classroom or community? Are you committed to fully serving a diverse population of students?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, our program is right for you! Also, we offer a combination of classroom and online courses that serve both local and distance learners.

In order to obtain certification for bilingual education after completion of courses, students have to pass "La Prueba," a bilingual certification test, offered through Eastern New Mexico University. You can register for the test here: www.enmu.edu/testing.

Northern offers over 50 bachelor's, associate and certificate programs in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math); Nursing and Health Sciences; Liberal Arts and Humanities; Arts, Film & Media; Business Administration; Teacher Education and Technical Trades.
