What is Radiation Protection?

Radiation Protection is a crucial field focused on safeguarding individuals from the harmful effects of radiation exposure in various industries such as healthcare, nuclear energy, and environmental monitoring. Professionals in this field implement safety measures and protocols to minimize radiation risks for workers and the public.

Why study Radiation Protection @ NNMC?

At Northern, our Radiation Protection AAS program teaches state of the art practices in industrial hygiene, and provides students with a comprehensive understanding of radiation science and safety. More about the program:

The Associate of Applied Science in Radiation Protection at Northern is an in-person program of about 30 students who study radiation science, learn to use radiation detection instruments, and hear from national- and world-leading experts on best practices in the field.  We have a dedicated radiation protection lab, and classes are typically 5-10 students.

Although the basic concepts of radiation protection are the same everywhere, jobs in the field range from medical care, research support, cleanup of legacy waste, and even aircraft maintenance Most students are able to obtain internships at Los Alamos National Laboratories (LANL).

The Technical Certificate/Radiation Control Technician (RCT) program teaches entry level skills required for employment in the nuclear industry, indulcing conducting and interpreting radiation surveys, and assessing personnel protection requirements.

The Nuclear Operations Technology AAS program is designed to prepare you for a career as a Nuclear Operator in environmental programs and scientific laboratories. The program prepares you to interpret radiation survey data, assess personal protection requirements, properly sample sites with potential contaminations and actively participate in appropriate environmental clean-up.
