Mar 20, 2026 $25,000 Youth Civic Infrastructure Fund grant boosts NNMCs Parkinson’s glove development What began three years ago as the Parkinson’s Glove Project at Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) and Española Valley High School’s (EVHS) has transformed into Española GloveWorks, a newly formed 501(c)(3) focused on developing youth creativity, technical competence and leadership while bringing the hope of a promising technology to people suffering from Parkinson's disease. Students from the EVHS MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement) program are working with mentors from Northern’s Engineering and Nursing departments and community volunteers to develop gloves to ease the symptoms of Parkinson’s.
Mar 12, 2026 President Balderas Greets Community at El Rito Food Distribution Cars slowly lined up along the drive at Northern New Mexico College’s El Rito Campus as families arrived for the monthly Food Depot distribution.
This time, they were greeted not only by volunteers — but by NNMC President Hector Balderas, who spent the afternoon welcoming community members, shaking hands, and handing out Northern New Mexico College hats and shirts.
For many families in rural northern New Mexico, this monthly distribution provides an important source of food and support. The event takes place every third Thursday of the month on the El Rito Campus and serves residents from El Rito and surrounding communities.

Mar 11, 2025 Women's History Month Celebration 2025 Last Thursday’s Women’s History Month celebration and International Women’s Day offered inspiration and recognition for the incredible women at Northern New Mexico College. The event honored several women for their contributions and showcased powerful stories of resilience, mentorship, and achievement.
The event was organized by Tammy Winston from Student Life, Khiana Valencia from CASSC, and Milam Shah from Communications. Together, they also created a Gratitude Wall—a special space where students, faculty, and staff could honor the women who have inspired them.
Mar 04, 2024 Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller engages with students at Northern New Mexico College Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller visited Northern New Mexico College on February 23, 2024, to engage with our students in their classrooms and during a panel discussion. The mayor donated a retired city bus to the college, which will provide a vehicle for students taking Northern’s CDL training to practice their driving skills, and recruited for job opportunities in Albuquerque. NNMC and ABQ signed an MOU to work collaboratively to establish internship and career opportunities for NNMC students with the City of Albuquerque.
Mar 01, 2023 Northern's Alumnus Brenda “G Precious” Atencio wins Native American Music Award It sounds like a plot from a Hollywood movie: a chance conversation opens the door for a hip-hop/R & B artist from Ohkay Owingeh to write lyrics and record a song with Grammy Award Winner Macy Gray. But that is what happened to Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) alumnus Brenda “G Precious” Atencio. That recording, “Unforgettable,” won the Native American Music Awards 2022 “Best Song of the Year.”
