EMERGENCY PHONES:

Blue light towers (Blue Light Poles) are located across campus for your safety. You can find them in the following locations: List the areas where blue poles are located: between nursing and admin, Blue Bus services, Ben Lujan Library, etc.

The Northern New Mexico College Safety and Security Department (505.747.2158) serves the Española and El Rito campuses and is responsible for all property the College owns. The Department is proactive in its approach, maintaining adequate staffing to provide proactive patrol, crime prevention, and the ability to offer investigative services. They are always ready to provide first-response level capability for most incidents within the campus community. While campus Safety and Security Officers are not police officers and do not have the power of arrest, they play a crucial role in reporting crimes when they occur. The department thoroughly investigates all crimes on college property, independently or in cooperation with law enforcement agencies.  The Safety and Security Department maintains positive working relationships with area law enforcement agencies and will cooperate fully with any investigation through prosecution, if possible or required.

In addition, Safety and Security staff will thoroughly investigate alleged violations of the Student Code brought to the Departments’ attention or those that Security and Staff members directly observe.

Campus Safety and Security staff regularly inspect all interior and exterior buildings for life safety issues, chemical storage, lights not operating correctly, and vehicle and pedestrian safety issues. Corrective recommendations in Work Orders will be sent to the Facilities department or other responsible party.

Campus Safety and Security Officers are in the Montoya Administration Building and the Ben Lujan Library.

Sexual Offender Information

By the Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act of 2000, which amends the Jacob Wetterling Crimes against Children and Sexually Violent Offender Registration Act, the Jeanne Clery Act, and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, Santa Fe Community College is providing a link to the New Mexico Public Sex Offender Registry. All sex offenders are required to register in New Mexico and give notice to each institution of higher education in New Mexico at which the person is employed, carries a vocation, or is a student.

  • The New Mexico Public Sexual Offender Registry can be reached at www.nmsexoffender.dps.state.nm.us. In addition to the above notice to the State of New Mexico, all sex offenders must deliver written notice of their status as a sex offender to the Santa Fe Community College Registrar within ten business days of their enrollment in, employment with, or volunteering at the College. Santa Fe Community College may disseminate such notification for the college community's safety and well-being.

Clery Report

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act is a federal statute requiring colleges and universities participating in federal financial aid programs to maintain and disclose campus crime statistics and security information. The U.S. Department of Education reviews an institution's compliance with the Clery Act requirements. A review may be initiated when a complaint is received, a media event raises specific concerns, the school's independent audit identifies serious noncompliance, or through a review selection process that may also coincide with state reviews performed by the FBI's Criminal Justice Information Service (CJIS) Audit Unit. Once a review is completed, the Department issues a Final Program Review Determination. Although regular program reviews may contain Clery Act findings, this page only includes program reviews focused exclusively on the Clery Act.

EAGLE ALERT:

Eagle Alert is Northern New Mexico College’s emergency notification system.  Students, staff, faculty and adjunct faculty will be notified of emergency incidents that occur on the Espanola and El Rito Campuses.  An alert will be sent via email, text message or phone call informing individuals of situations that occur and procedures to follow such as “Shelter in Place”, or “Lock Down”.

SHELTER IN PLACE:

  • You may be advised to "shelter in place" rather than evacuate your building during emergency situations such as large hazardous material releases or severe weather emergencies. The recommendation to shelter in place will be conveyed through official university notification systems.
  • Stay inside the building or go indoors as quickly as possible if you are working outside.
  • Close windows to provide tighter seal against chemicals vapors, smoke and/or fumes.
  • Locate supplies you may need such as food, water, radio, or flashlights if you have them.
  • In the event of a hazardous material release, turn off fans, air conditioning or ventilation systems, if you have control of these systems.
  • Monitor official NNMC emergency notification systems information for further instructions.

These are general guidelines that will help you to remember what to do in the event of a Shelter in Place or Lockdown event on campus, but each situation may present unique challenges. The most important aspect in both a Shelter in Place and Lockdown event is to put effective barriers between you and the threat.

The actions taken in the initial minutes of an emergency are critical. Plan ahead, and know your options. If you become aware of an emergency before receiving an official alert, take-action to make sure you are safe, and contact emergency responders by dialing 911, or by contacting Northern New Mexico College Security 505.747.2158.

LOCKDOWN:

A lockdown may be instructed during situations such as the presence of a hostile or armed intruder inside a building. A lockdown requires locking doors, windows, and barricading oneself to block entry to a campus facility, a classroom, or to an office suite.

  • Lock or barricade classroom and office doors.
  • Close windows and window treatments.
  • Turn off the lights.
  • Instruct everyone to remain silent and not to go into hallways.
  • Crouch down in areas out of sight from doors and windows to conceal yourself as much as possible.
  • If you are in hallways during the emergency, seek shelter immediately in the nearest class- room or office suite.
  • If you are in outdoor areas, you should immediately take cover.
  • Monitor official NNMC emergency notification systems information for further instructions, or an “all clear”

These are general guidelines that will help you to remember what to do in the event of a Shelter in Place or Lockdown event on campus, but each situation may present unique challenges. The most important aspect in both a Shelter in Place and Lockdown event is to put effective barriers between you and the threat.
