Cost of Attendance (COA)

In addition to the direct cost of tuition and fees, Northern New Mexico College is required to estimate a cost of attendance (COA) that includes indirect costs such as personal expenses, books, and transportation.

While the COA can be one of the more confusing aspects of the financial aid process, it gives students and their families an idea of what costs might be incurred beyond tuition and fees so they can plan accordingly.

It is important to differentiate between direct and indirect costs, as indirect costs are simply estimates used by Northern’s Financial Aid Office during the awarding process to determine a student's financial need. Direct costs are the amounts that will be charged to the student's account.

Keep in mind that Northern’s Financial Aid Office can only award students an amount of aid equal to or less than their associated cost of attendance budget. Students who have questions regarding their budget should contact the Financial Aid Office.

Should a student receive more aid than allowed by their COA the Financial Aid Office will reduce funds in the following order:

  • Student Loans
  • Work Study
  • Institutional Aid
  • Other state, federal and private aid as needed
