Low Rider Cruise Through Española

The New Mexico Land Grant Commission’s meeting held at Northern New Mexico College on Thursday, June 25, 2024, was marked by a unique and vibrant event: a police-escorted cruise through the streets of Española with LOS GUYS CC, a renowned lowrider club. The cruise, arranged by Senator Leo Jaramillo, highlighted the rich cultural heritage and community spirit of Española, proudly known as the Low Rider Capitol of the world.

Senator Jaramillo, addressing the commissioners and attendees, said, “I’m proud to represent the Low Rider Capitol of the world, where we’re brown, we’re down and we’re low to the ground.” His statement resonated with the diverse crowd, reflecting the pride and unity of the Española community.

The event saw the participation of several esteemed commissioners, including Representative Harry Garcia, Representative Stefani Lord, Senator Elizabeth Stefanics, and Senator Shannon Pinto. These officials joined the tour, experiencing firsthand the unique blend of tradition, art, and community that lowriding represents in Española.

Senator Elizabeth Stefanics shared her enthusiasm about the event, remarking, "It was great to see the police and the lowriders working together. This collaboration is a testament to the strong community bonds and mutual respect that exist in our city." Her sentiments were echoed by other commissioners, who praised the initiative as an excellent introduction to the vibrant culture of Española.

The police-escorted cruise was not just a display of the lowrider culture but also a demonstration of the positive relationship between law enforcement and the community. The cooperation between the lowriders and the police ensured a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

A significant part of the event's success was due to the enthusiastic participation of the lowriders from LOS GUYS CC. Their beautifully crafted and meticulously maintained vehicles were a sight to behold, showcasing the artistry and dedication that goes into lowriding. The lowriders’ commitment to their craft and community was evident and appreciated by all who attended.

Special thanks are extended to the Española Police Department for their support and cooperation in making this event possible. Their involvement was crucial in ensuring the safety and smooth operation of the cruise, demonstrating the positive impact of community policing.

The lowrider cruise was a perfect way to introduce the commissioners to the heart and soul of Española, offering them a glimpse into the city's unique cultural landscape. The event highlighted the importance of preserving and celebrating local traditions while fostering community connections.

The New Mexico Land Grant Commission’s meeting at Northern New Mexico College was a resounding success, thanks in large part to this innovative and culturally significant event. The commissioners left with a deeper understanding and appreciation of Española’s heritage and community spirit.
