The College of Nursing and Health Sciences is honoring generous supporters of nursing at Northern Ruth Palmlund Maley and Leonard Maley as it dedicates a nursing simulation laboratory in their honor later this month. The College has issued an open invitation to the public to participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the inauguration of the newly named Ruby Palmlund and Leonard Maley Simulation Laboratory on Thursday, April 28.
Ruby Palmlund Maley was a navey cadet nurse and Leonard Maley was an officer in the United States Navy. Additionally, their daughter, Dr. Kathleen Maley, was a medical doctor in the Española Valley for many years before her retirement in 2015. The family established the Ruby Palmlund and Leonard Maley Nursing Endowment Scholarship Fund in 2003 for Northern nursing students after being inspired by the excellent care Leonard Maley received from Northern nursing graduates while he was in the Española Valley Rehab nursing home.
Every year, the Northern Foundation awards scholarships from the Maley fund to five to seven students in the Associate Degree Nursing Program at Northern. Since the scholarship fund was established, fifty-one students have received a $5,000 scholarship award.
“This scholarship is one of the most important ones for our ADN program,” said Theresa Lopez, Director of the ADN Program. “Not only does it provide our students with means to continue their nursing studies under less financial burden, but it also reminds of us of the very heart of our program and calling as nurses: to provide exceptional patient care. Because of the great care Mr. Maley received from our graduates, this fund exists.”
To participate in the simulation lab dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony, come to the Seledon Martinez Building on Northern’s Española campus at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 28. All are invited to attend and honor the legacy of care and excellence that the Maleys have been an integral part of at Northern’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences.
