Northern New Mexico College welcomes Dr. Karen Hall as interim Music Program director and interim Fine Arts Department chair.
Karen was born in Kentucky and educated in Texas, New York City, and Salzburg, Austria. She received a Bachelor and Master of Music degree in vocal performance from the University of Houston. She completed additional study in operetta was at the Mozarteum Summer Academy in Salzburg, Austria and graduated from Teachers College at Columbia University with a Doctor of Education Degree in 2006.
"I have wanted to live in New Mexico since first visiting at age 12. The rich cultural heritage and beauty of the land inspire and draw me here. It is a honor to join the faculty at Northern," she said.
Karen has resided in Santa Fe since 2010 and served as the Series Editor since 2013 for "So You Want to Sing: A Guide for Professionals," a series of voice pedagogy books produced in partnership with Roman & Littlefield Publishers and the National Association of Teachers of Singing. She continues research on CCM voice pedagogy and will present the results of her latest research project at the Texoma NATS Regional Conference in November of 2015.
Previously, Karen has been a faculty member at the Crane School of Music/SUNY Potsdam, the Boston Conservatory, the Berklee School of Music in Boston, New York University and East Carolina University. During the summer of 2010, Karen was a Visiting Professor at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand.
Karen's research and subsequent teaching guide concerning music theater vocal pedagogy has been recognized by the College Music Society, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the Voice Symposium, and the Texoma NATS Artist Series in the form of invitations to present poster presentations and lectures. In 2011, the Fulbright Organization approved Karen's application to become a Fulbright Specialist. As a Fulbright Specialist, she will travel to foreign universities to share her research and teaching specialty-contemporary voice pedagogy.
"I value the diversity, culture and traditions of New Mexico, and I am looking forward to building education models focused on honoring and teaching those themes," she said.
