Española, NM – Northern New Mexico College has announced the appointment of Dr. Joaquin Vilá as Dean of the College of Education and Co-Project director of AVANCE.

Vilá comes to Northern from Salisbury University in Maryland, where he served as a tenured faculty member and program administrator for fourteen years. Prior to Salisbury, Dr. Vilá also taught at the University of Nevada-Reno, Minnesota State University-Mankato, and the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez.

As the Dean of the College of Education, Vilá will be responsible for supervising faculty and adjuncts, fostering relationships with school districts and expanding the College of Education portfolio of certificates and degrees.

As Co-Director of AVANCE, a collaborative project between the Colleges of Education and Engineering, Dr. Vilá will expand post baccalaureate experiences for students through collaboration with other state university partners.

Vila holds a B.A. in English from the University of Puerto Rico and a MS. and Ph.D. in Linguistics from Michigan State University.  His professional experiences include teaching in a variety of public school settings, including rural, vocational private and urban schools. Vila has 29 years of experience as a faculty member and administrator.

Vilá has been nationally recognized for his service in the assessment and accreditation of teacher preparation programs.  For eight years he was a Specialty Program Area (SPA) program reviewer and auditor for TESOL, a member of the national team revising the TESOL Professional Standards, and a member of the Board of Examiners (BOE) for NCATE.  He currently serves as a site visitor for the Council for the Accreditation for Educator Preparation (CAEP).

He has been actively involved in faculty governance being engaged in international education, teacher preparation, honors programs, the Graduate Council and institutional assessment and accreditation.
