Northern New Mexico College Basketball: Century Bank Classic is this weekend!

Two former NBA players coaching in the tournament will be honored at halftime Dec. 8

Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) hosts the three-day “Century Bank Classic” Tournament this weekend, Dec. 8 – 10. Century Bank underwrote the tournament between Northern, University of Lincoln-OK and Navajo Technical University with a $5,000 donation.

“Century Bank is one of the last community banks in the state. We are locally owned,” said Century Bank SVP/Market President Thomas Martinez. “We love investing into our Valley through donations and sponsorships to events such as this, which bring out our community to come and support our NNMC students.”

The highlight will be a halftime ceremony on Dec. 8 to honor Lincoln Coach Gary Payton, a legendary former NBA player who is in the Hall of Fame, and Northern’s own Coach Terry Tyler, who played 15 years in the NBA. Martinez and NNMC President Hector Balderas will present plaques to the coaches during halftime.

“It’s really interesting that we’re going to have these two big NBA legends in our home. We will honor their work for so many years playing in the NBA and the work that they did as role models,” said NNMC Athletic Director/Head Coach Jesus Aragon. “So the communities can’t miss these games. They have to be part of this and part of the tournament.”
