Northern New Mexico College will be the host site for the 2015 Men’s and Women’s AII Conference Basketball Tournament February 27- 28, bringing teams from across the country to compete in an event that will send one men’s team and one women’s team to the national championships.

The NNMU men are reigning conference champions following their conference tournament wins last season. If they win again, they will be the first team in New Mexico history to go to the NAIA National Tournament two years in a row.

“This is a very big deal for us,” Northern Athletic Director and Men’s Basketball Coach Ryan Cordova said. “Hosting the conference tournament not only means home court advantage, but it will also be a huge benefit for the local economy.”

Cordova estimates that the event may have an impact of $70,000 to$80,000 on the local economy from combined ticket sales and local housing, dining and entertainment.

Both the men and lady Eagles have had record-breaking seasons, with 13-10 and 11-12 respective records this season. Both teams have also achieved the highest average GPA in the program’s history at Northern.

The program has seen a meteoric rise since its start in 2009, with the men making their first ever National Tournament appearance and women making their first ever Conference Tournament appearance last season.  Games often draw large crowds from the community and are regularly won by a close spread.

“We want the whole community to come out and join us,“ Cordova said. “And, if you haven’t been to a Northern game yet, now’s the time.”
