Northern New Mexico College awarded $350,000 in
National Science Foundation Grants

Northern New Mexico College has been awarded two grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The first is a two-year campus cyber-infrastructure grant which is titled Northern's Network Expansion for Large Science and Engineering Data Flows, will allow the College to establish a dedicated high-speed campus research network to connect multiple teaching and research laboratories across the state.

"This award is a result of a highly collaborative effort among faculty and staff at Northern," said Jorge Crichigno, Associate Professor and Project Director for the grant. "The proposal required the involvement of the College's Biology, Environmental Science, Engineering, Chemistry, IT and Mathematics Departments."

Following a comprehensive review process, Northern received the award notification from the NSF on September 21. A total of 150 proposals were submitted and a total of nine awards were made to institutions like Northern who are facing fundamental challenges in addressing networking infrastructures.

The second grant totalling $50,000is from NSF New Mexico EBSCOR. Both grants work together to improve Northern's network infrastructure and data storage capacity.

The NSF is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 to: promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; and to secure the national defense. It is the funding source for approximately 24 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities.
