12th Annual Academic Research, Creativity, and Scholarship Symposium Highlights Northern Student Projects

Northern New Mexico College hosted its 12th Annual Academic Research, Creativity, and Scholarship Symposium on Thursday, May 5, highlighting student activities across various disciplines at Northern, including biology, psychology, education, and engineering. The enthusiastic buzz of conversation filling the second floor of the Ben Lujan Library during the four hours of the symposium made it clear that students and faculty are excited about undergraduate student research at Northern.

“Two semesters of hard but exciting work came together where I had once doubted myself in the beginning,” said Har Dev Singh Khalsa, one of the students presenting at the symposium. “I had a great time, enjoyed working on my own topic in Yoga and meditation, and thanks to my guide and research consultant, Dr. Stephanie Amedeo Marquez, I learned a great deal about the passion, diligence, and rewards of scientific research."

“The symposium is a great opportunity for students to showcase their research projects, to improve their oral presentation skills and to round up a whole semester or year of work in a comprehensible layout,” said Dr. Brenda Linnell, one of the faculty members who helped organize this year’s symposium. “The symposium is open to all Northern students and we always look forward to this event each year for the rest of the community to see what’s happening in their classes and research.”

Students presented summaries of their projects via poster boards set up around the presentation space, and were available to talk with people who had questions or comments about their projects. View pictures from the symposium here: Go to photo album.
