Leo Jaramillo begins his first year as NNMC’s Spirit Program’s Head Cheer and Dance Coach. Leo will be making school history as the first spirit coach at Northern and has big plans for the college’s competitive program. The Spirit Program will promote school spirit while supporting NNMC athletics and volunteering in and around the community.
Leo is a proud alumnus of the University of New Mexico (UNM) where he cheered on the Lobo’s as a member of the nationally ranked Co-Ed Cheer Team for four years.
He successfully coached and choreographed high school cheer and dance teams across the state for nearly 15 years. His successful spirit programs and his commitment to student athletes at Española Valley High School (EVHS) were major contributors to Leo being named the 2009 New Mexico Activities Associations’ (NMAA) Spirit Coach of the Year.
In 2011, he was honored as the National Federation of State High School Associations Competitive Spirit Squads Official of the year. The honor was bestowed upon him for his role as one of the very first spirit officials in the state of New Mexico; the same year spirit was inducted as a sport by the NMAA.
In 2013, Leo was named a Legend in cheer and dance for his successful career as a cheerleader, coach, chorographer and judge.
Leo continues to be actively involved in spirit by judging at the state and national level. He is currently assisting the NMAA with spirit by training new judges and serving on a team of three to organize and execute the state spirit competition.
Leo is a native son of the Española Valley and a 1995 graduate of EVHS.
