Meet the Provost: Pedro L. Martinez, PhD
Dr. Pedro L. Martinez is a scholar, administrator and academic innovator with a depth and breadth of exceptional experiences in higher education that span for over 35 years. He is presently a Full Professor (tenured) in the School of Education and Human Performance Department of Educational Leadership, Counseling and Professional Studies.
Dr. Martinez earned his doctorate in social foundations from Loyola University in Chicago, and a Master of Education and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Hartford, CT. He served as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Interim Chancellor at Winston Salem State University (2006-2008).
Prior to this appointment, Martinez served as the Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs and Associate Dean of Graduate Studies at William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ. He was the school's primary liaison to educational partners in the region, while running the day-to-day operations of its graduate school. He was responsible for establishing articulation agreements between the state community colleges and the university, and oversaw three university centers that facilitated community college students to complete their bachelor's degree at their respective local campuses.
Dr. Martinez worked at Chicago State University as a tenured professor and administrator, where he established a national reputation for academic leadership in diversity and multilingual education issues. He developed and taught education courses at the Chicago Urban Skills Center of Malcolm X College, Governors' State University in University Park, Illinois and Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago.
