Twenty Years in the Heart of the Valley: Northern Foundation Gala Recap
On November 14, 2015 the Northern Foundation community gathered to celebrate 20 Years in the Heart of the Valley at our annual gala in the Ohkay Owingeh Convention Center ballroom. 500 supporters came out for an incredible sold-out event that included our Northern Foundation scholars, donors, sponsors, faculty and staff, NNMC students and other special guests. We were treated to performances by Roberto Mondragon y Los Amigos and the Ice Mountain Dance Group of Ohkay Owingeh. We had a great time!
Amidst the Gala festivities, we kicked off our Community Fund campaign. We raised funds. We felt an inspired feeling of partnership to help fill financial gaps for so many deserving Northern students. Thank you to everyone who joined us and supported us! We enjoyed the expansive accommodations, had great conversations with friends old and new, and felt renewed commitment, excitement and hope for the Foundation’s next 20 years. The live auction was a dynamic and fun-filled cap to the evening and would not have been possible without our generous bidders and auction donors.
By all accounts, it was a very special night. With all our Board members in attendance, we celebrated two decades of impact and investment in the lives of New Mexicans. Keynote speaker and Northern Alumnus Jay Abeyta, an exemplar of community advocacy, encouraged guests and scholars to have faith, patience and perseverance on the path toward their own personal gratification and success. I think this has been the trademark of the Foundation as we built an endowment of over $3 million.
20 Years in the Heart of the Valley was our most important fundraising event to date eclipsing previously achieved benchmarks thanks to our Gala sponsors and donors. These funds will help the Foundation fulfill its mission to support students first and also faculty, staff and the community at-large as we strive toward social change in the Valley.
Every dollar invested that night symbolizes what we can accomplish with a shared vision for a vibrant and flourishing Valley. These funds will have a ripple effect through our community as we help students reap the benefits of a college degree.
A Welcome from Terry Mulert
Northern Foundation Director
As the Executive Director of the Northern Foundation, I aim to cultivate thoughtful philanthropy in the Española Valley and surrounding region in support of the College's mission.
I want to help NNMC connect its values, vision and goals to our neighbors locally, statewide and nationally so that the Northern Foundation can increase its resources for the benefit of students, the College and the community.
Northern New Mexico is a very special place, and I continue to be inspired by her stark contrasts in topography, culture, climate, ethnicity and lifestyle. For over 25 years I have lived in the historic mountain village of Cordova with my wife Paula and son Francis, both native New Mexicans, and I have worked at Northern in various capacities during most of that time – from teaching and tutoring to program work and volunteering.
I am excited to celebrate the Foundation’s 20 years of awarding scholarships and growing funds to support the dynamic ambitions of this wonderful school serving students from here in the Valley and dozens of surrounding communities.
I look forward to meeting with you soon!

Northern has moved into its second century as an educational institution and aspires to meet the higher educational needs and demands of our community and changing world. With 13 Baccalaureate degree programs and a growing student body, there are increasing demands for qualified faculty, new and improved facilities, and state of the art technologies.
The Foundation’s mission is to increase, manage and distribute resources for the benefit of the students, college and community. Your support is critical if we are to successfully meet the demands and challenges before us.
Northern New Mexico College Foundation — a non profit 501(c)(3) corporation — has been raising funds to support scholarships and other college initiatives since 1995. The Foundation exists to promote and further the interests, objectives and purposes of the College; to seek and receive gifts, legacies and grants of money or other tangible assets; to administer such for the benefit of the college; and to provide active leadership, direction and expertise in fund raising efforts for the College.
The Foundation's Scholarship Endowment Funds have grown to over three million. The endowments are one additional way to ensure access to higher education for students from throughout northern New Mexico. The majority of our students balance work, school and family in an effort to improve their lives. Scholarship support can keep students focused on completion of their education.
The Foundation office is located in the Administration Building, Room 133, on the Española campus of Northern New Mexico College, 921 Paseo de Oñate, Española, NM 87532.
