Dance for Life Pow Wow day

Dance for Life Pow Wow

The first annual Dance for Life Pow Wow day was celebrated at Northern New Mexico College Friday.

Governor Martinez declared May 31 “Methamphetamine Suicide Prevention Initiative Dance for Life Pow-Wow Day" throughout the state of New Mexico, to be celebrated through the inaugural event. President Nancy “Rusty” Barceló also issued an executive proclamation declaring Friday “Substance Use Disorder and Suicide Awareness Day” for Northern’s two campuses.

Speakers were present throughout the afternoon on campus to talk about Substance Abuse Disorder (SUD), its impacts and prevention. Following was an energetic Pow Wow dance in recognition of cultural tradition as a form of treatment and intervention for SUD.

The event was sponsored by Northern’s American Indian Center, PIS program, American Student Organization, and EXITO Counseling at Northern. Circle of Life Behavioral Network, Peace Keepers Domestic Violence Program and Local Collaborative 18 also sponsored the event.
