The Northern community and engineering students in particular love the Solar Energy Research Park and Academy (SERPA), which has blossomed as a state-of-the-art learning center, thanks in no small part to the generous support of ConocoPhillips.

Thanks to ConocoPhillips support in 2016, the computer laboratory in our High Tech building, Rm 123, has been fully upgraded. The lab, pictured left, is used by all engineering students and several key classes.
SERPA is home to Northern’s College of Engineering and Technology, which currently offers Bachelor’s and Associate degrees in Information Engineering Technology, Software Engineering and Electromechanical Engineering Technology.
With more than $70,000 in contributions from ConocoPhillips over the past five years, SERPA has made infrastructure improvements to classrooms and community spaces, building on its reputation as the most functional and aesthetic building on Northern’s campus.
Notably, every SERPA classroom now features SMART Board technology, providing enhanced interactive and collaborative learning environments for students. Besides seamlessly combining interactive whiteboard, computer and projector input, SMART Boards also record lecture material and allow students campus-wide to access that material outside of the classroom.
For engineering students taking a difficult freshman class, Introduction to Math for Engineering Applications, the funds have meant new equipment for hands-on robotics, motion, thermal, and solar experiments.
“First year engineering majors benefit greatly from these applied learning experiences, which result in better learning outcomes and increased first-year retention,” said Dr. Lopez, Dean of the College of Engineering and Technology. “I don’t want to say that the class is easier with the new equipment, but difficult mathematical concepts are easier to grasp with hands-on active learning equipment.”
In addition to the hardware and software, ConocoPhillips funds made the lobby and outdoor areas lively centers for student interaction, resulting in more students studying and spending time at SERPA. These improvements include lounge chairs, a sofa, and tables and chairs in the building’s lobby and classrooms, outdoor patio furniture, and stools for computer labs.
ConocoPhillips’ support of Northern’s engineering students through years of generous contributions has noticeably enriched the student experience at Northern.

September 28, 2017 - The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at Northern New Mexico College invites applications for a nine (9) month, non‐tenure‐track visiting faculty position with a contract starting January 2018 to teach Humanities, Social Sciences, and Pueblo Indian studies courses in our unique B.A. in Integrated Studies program. This will be a one‐year appointment, with a possible one semester extension.
The ideal candidate will teach courses in an integrated program, typically Psychology and Humanities or perhaps Native American Studies, depending upon qualifications.
Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) is a public two‐year and four‐year degree granting institution founded in 1909 by the New Mexico Constitution. NNMC is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. NNMC operates from two campuses in Espanola and El Rito and serves an average of 1,000 students per semester.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teach four (4) courses per semester;
Attend departmental and college meetings;
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Master’s degree with 18 graduate credit hours in Humanities, Psychology or American Indian Studies.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: a) Ph.D. in the areas sought, b) expertise in Counseling or Clinical Psychology, particularly in the area of addiction and/or multicultural counseling, c) one (1) year of teaching experience in Higher Education, d)experience in contexts of mental health treatment and experience in an integrated studies program.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Successful teaching experience or demonstrated ability (especially with culturally diverse students);
Interest in, or experience within integrative or inter‐disciplinary programs;
Knowledge of principle and indigenous methods for curriculum and training design;
Experience with a variety of teaching resources, media and technologies, including computer‐ aided instruction and/or online instruction technologies;
Ability to articulate and support the NNMC philosophy with a strong commitment to teaching and learning in an academic setting.

This position is responsible for the coordination of first-year student success and retention initiatives and requires collaboration directly with a variety of faculty and staff to design and implement activities and programs intended to promote academic success, student retention and persistence of college students and facilitates the development and implementation of student retention initiatives related to student success. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for supervision of the Advisement Center, Academic Advisors and the First-Year Intrusive Advising Plan. This position provides supervision and works closely with academic advisors and the testing center staff to ensure that a proactive, developmental and student-centered approach is taken with all departmental functions;
Responsible for the day to day operations of the unit including planning and budget oversight;
Maintain the overall effectiveness of the program through hiring, supervision and evaluation of staff;
Serve as lead academic advisor in the Institutional Advisement Department and coordinates, prepares, and implements department-wide goals, procedures and controls;
Coordinate Fall and Spring New Student Orientation activities;
Provide training, technical assistance, and collaboration opportunities for faculty advisors;
Serve as an instructor for the First-Year Experience course (teaching up to two sections per semester) and assist with the recruitment, selection, training and support for other FYE faculty;
Oversee and coordinate the NNMC Early Alert system and Advisement Committee;
Provide direct supervision of the staff in Testing (HiSET, CLEP, AccuPlacer, and other); serve as a back-up proctor;
Participate in various campus committees related to student affairs/services, student success and retention, and strategic enrollment management;
Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s Degree in education, psychology or a related field.Three years (3) experience in academic advising, student affairs, or other related student services in higher education. Equivalent related experience may be substituted for education on a year to year basis.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in education, psychology or a related field. Experience in personnel, supervision, and budget management. Instructional experience in higher education. Experience working with multicultural populations. Experience working with Ellucian Banner Administrative Software (Native & Self-Service Banner).
