Academic Quality Improvement Project (AQIP)
In July 1999, the North Central Association Commission on Institutions of Higher Education initiated an Academic Quality Improvement Project (AQIP), with support from the Pew Charitable Trusts of Philadelphia. AQIP's goal is to design an innovative, more challenging alternative to current re-accreditation, one that engages institutions by increasing the tangible benefits it delivers to them. This will be accomplished through a new accreditation process, based on quality improvement principles and values.
In October 2001 Northern New Mexico College selected and completed the Higher Learning Commission's AQIP Application. It was selected as the College's preferred method for re-accreditation due to its innovativeness and ability to build quality principles into the college's culture. By November 2001 the Higher Learning Commission approved Northern's AQIP Agreement and provided Northern with its Statement of Affiliation Status (SAS), "Next Reaffirmation of Accreditation" through 2008-09. As part of this innovative accreditation system Northern New Mexico College agrees:
- To commit itself to a systematic initiative to improve continuously its academic and related processes and their results;
- To participate in scheduled AQIP activities essential to the operation of this accreditation process; and
- To provide AQIP with regular information and evidence of Northern New Mexico College's systematic efforts and accomplishments in continuous academic quality improvement, and to participate in activities required by AQIP for accrediting determinations.
