The Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) program (Applied Networking concentration) is designed to prepare students for professional positions in Information Technology as designers, implementers, and operators of computing networks and networked systems and for growth into leadership positions in the field.
Information Technology (IT) in its broadest sense encompasses all aspects of computing technology. IT focuses on meeting the needs of users within an organizational and societal context through the selection, creation, application, integration, and administration of computing technologies.
Today, organizations of every kind are dependent on information technology. They need to have appropriate systems in place. Those systems must work properly, be secure, and be upgraded, maintained, and replaced as appropriate. People in organizations require support from IT staff that understand computer systems and their software, and are committed to solving whatever computer-related problems they might have. Graduates of information technology programs address these needs.
The admissions process has two parts. One involves NNMC's Office of Admissions. The other involves the Computer and Engineering Technology Department.
The following materials must be submitted to NNMC's Office of Admissions and Records prior to acceptance into the BS program.
To take 100 and 200 level IT, CS (computer science), or CT (computer technology) courses required in the BSIT program, the student must have minimum ACT, SAT, or NNMC Math and English placement scores that result in placement into the ENG-109 and MATH-130 levels. The student must also have completed CS-102 and CS-132 or must provide evidence of knowledge contained in these courses. Evidence of completion may be shown by transcripts from other colleges or high schools, proficiency exams, or work experience.
Students who are tracking in the Information Technology program are strongly advised to see the BSIT program director for advisement as early as possible.
Students wishing to be admitted as a BSIT major must submit the following to the BSIT CET Department Chair or BSIT Program Director:
Unless students have been admitted as majors, they cannot enroll in 300 or 400 level courses without express written permission of the IT faculty advisor.
Information for Transfer Students
Admission to the program will depend upon the evaluation of the student's transcripts by the Information Technology Admissions Committee through the Department Faculty Chair. This evaluation will generally follow the guidelines above for admission as a BSIT major.
Acceptance Notification
After review of all required application materials, if accepted into the BSIT program, the candidate is sent a formal acceptance letter, and a copy is sent to the Registrar.
Pre-requisites for entry to this program include CS 102 and CS 132, and ENG 109N and MATH 130N, or adequate scores on the Course Placement Evaluation.
