Anthony Sena, a 24-year veteran biology instructor andscience department Chairman at Northern New Mexico College, has been named the school’s first Provost.
As a four-year college, the Provost position replaces the Dean of Instruction position, and has oversight of the College’s academic and vocational programs. Sena will begin his post on August 8.
Raised in DeBaca county in eastern New Mexico, Sena graduated from Fort Sumner High School and enrolled at Eastern New Mexico University. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Master’s degree in science at ENMU -becoming the first member of his family to attend and complete college. Sena also completed post-graduate work at the University of New Mexico from 1974-78.
In 1978-79 he taught biology at the Universidad Catolica de Puerto Rico in Ponce and in 1979-81 taught science in the Animas Public Schools. In 1981, Sena accepted a job teaching biology at Northern New Mexico Community College in Española. Since 1983 he has served as Chairman of the math and sciences department.
During Sena’s stint at NNMC, the school’s science department has received over a million dollars in grants for equipment, science outreach programs for mid-school students, and funding for undergraduate student research projects. The veteran educator has also published several scientific papers including a chapter in a biotechnology textbook.
In 1999, Sena was named to ENMU’s Science Alumni Hall of Honor and received a national SACNAS community college mentoring award.
With collaboration and support from staff and faculty at the Los Alamos National Labs and UNM, Sena has pursued research in molecular genetics and his Ph.D. in biomedical science from UNM’s school of medicine.
