Northern New Mexico College has hired a new college of education dean and dean of development.
Dan McLaughlin, director of planning and research at Diné College in Tsaile, Arizona, will oversee Northern’s teacher education department beginning Sept. 6.
McLaughlin, who has been involved in multicultural education for more than 30 years, helped develop bachelor’s and master’s programs in bilingual education at Diné College. He was an instructor at the Navajo Nation school and directed planning, institutional research, academic assessment and accreditation services.
McLaughlin began his teaching career in the mid-1970’s as a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco. He was an elementary school principal in Rock Point, Arizona, from 1987-1990 and was an assistant professor in curriculum and multicultural education at the University of Utah from 1990-1992.
He was also a visiting professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the University of Arizona and has served as a consultant and evaluator for the Higher Learning Commission.
McLaughlin earned his Bachelor’s from Tufts University, a Master’s in Teaching English as a Second Language from the School for International Training in Bratboro, Vermont, and his Ph.D. in Educational Foundations from The University of New Mexico.
"I am thrilled about coming to Northern, and honored to be part of a talented and committed team,” said McLaughlin. “The pieces are in place for quality, transformative teacher preparation programs to flourish.”
David Trujillo, Director of the Grants and Sponsored Programs at New Jersey City University (NJCU), was named the college’s new dean of development and planning. Trujillo will take over the position vacated by Felicia Casado on Oct. 3.
At NJCU, Trujillo has coordinated and administered grants and contracts since 1999. Since then, the annual grants activity has increased from less than $2 million to approximately $6.5 million.
During a nine-year stint as Community and Special Projects Director at the University of Southern Colorado at Pueblo, Trujillo established the school’s first sponsored programs office and managed 11 federal and foundation-funded programs that generated around $2.2 million annually.
Trujillo also served as development director at Pueblo Community College from 1987 to 1990 and has served as a federal projects external evaluator at colleges across the country. Trujillo has played a major role in proposal writing and program development activities which have reeled in over $75 million in grant monies.
Trujillo received his Bachelor’s in English from San Jose State University (SJSU) and a Master’s in Community College Education from SJSU in 1974.
“The position at Northern pulls together all the various experiences, strengths and interests of my career,” said Trujillo. “The ongoing transformation of Northern into a regional university creates exciting opportunities, and I am excited to be able to contribute.”
