Thomas Garcia, a former LANL Deputy Laboratory Director, has been named Northern New Mexico College’s Executive Vice-President.
Garcia will take over administrative duties and integration of the college’s Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) beginning Sept. 1.
“My role is to help Northern’s transitional planning and implementation of the Regents vision of becoming a regional university by 2009,” Garcia said.
While at LANL, Mr. Garcia founded and chaired the LANL Foundation, created the LANL Research Park, formed the Educational and Economic Development Advisory Groups to LANL and implemented break through sub-contract provisions which encouraged investments in business initiatives in the tri-county area by large LANL subcontractors.
Garcia has also been past president and CEO of U S WEST Communications in New Mexico, president of L&M Technologies, Inc., and executive vice-president and Co-Owner of Graviton, Inc. a technology transfer start-up company - later acquired by Motorola, Inc. Most recently he served as executive vice-president and COO of the YDI Foundation, Inc. which supports the developmental and educational needs of low-income children, youth and families in communities throughout New Mexico.
“We are pleased to attract Thomas Garcia to Northern; his vast experience in large organization management and business administration will help the college excel in many of its vital objectives,” said Northern president Dr. Jose Griego.
Added Northern’s regent chair Michael Branch: “Thomas is a long standing supporter of the college. He served as the school’s Foundation chair has supported economic development in the tri-county area (Rio Arriba, Santa Fe, and Los Alamos), while Deputy Laboratory Director at LANL.”
