| Greater Espanola Valley Community Development Corporation | Northern has subcontracted with the Greater Espanola Valley Community Development Council as part of our Ford Foundation Rural Community College Initiative (RCCI) grant to enable the GEVCDC to lead the development of an 'e-portal' web site to allow area businesses and organizations to have a systematic web presence to market the region, their products, businesses, services. The GEVCDC will design a website system that will allow for linkages by local businesses, artisans, organizations to provide greater internet (web) exposure to market products/services and to help market the region as an economically vibrant rural region for development. In addition, the GEVCDC is housed in the College’s JCI Business Park at low rent cost, to enable the GEVCDC to maintain a public presence and office space. | Commercial Food Processing Kitchen | Northern provides a Food Scientist to staff the commercial food processing kitchen located within the JCI Business Park facility located on the College's Espanola Campus to support local economic development for area food producers. Local food producers/caterers process locally grown food items in the Commercial Food Kitchen enabling them to create value added products within a licensed kitchen environment. | Espanola Valley Farmers Market | The Espanola Valley Farmers Market is holding its Monday and Saturday markets on the College's Espanola Campus, in the parking lot of the JCI Business Park facility, located next to the Commercial Food Processing Kitchen. | Four Year degree in Teacher Education | During the 2004 New Mexico Legislature, the College received approval to award a four-year degree in Teacher Education. By summer 2004, national accreditation was received for the program. The goal(s) of the new 4-year Teacher Education initiative are to help alleviate the teacher workforce shortages that our rural northern New Mexico school district partners are facing. The second goal is to improve the pedagogy of teacher education majors by having them placed in the classroom as soon as their first semester of courses to better prepare teachers in classroom management and to improve teacher retention. This is a collaborative project with the Northern Network of Superintendents that asked for a new methodology in teacher training -- all in an effort to improve education for students in order to have a better prepared workforce. | Scheduled for March, 2009 | Scheduled for April, 2007 |
| Small Business Development Center | NNMC’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) supports the development of small businesses in the region through its services, i.e.: development of business plans, marketing plans and seeking of financing sources. In addition, the SBDC provides specialized training courses relevant to the needs of area business owners. NNMC’s SBDC is part of a statewide network that provides one-on-one assistance, entrepreneurial education through training workshops, and resource links for potential and existing businesses to strengthen the economy of New Mexico. | Workforce Training with Community Businesses | Computer software training offered to update community skills and professional development (including the advancement of local artisans). | Spanish Language Immersion Program | NNMC initiated the first accelerated Spanish Language Immersion Program on its El Rito Campus in an effort to enable people that want to learn Spanish to immerse themselves in the language and develop basic conversation skills or improve upon skills they may already have. | U.S. Forest Services | NNMC has developed an associate of applied science degree in Wildland Fire Science in response to the employment needs of the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. A large percentage of NNMC’s service area encompasses federal and state forest lands, translating into future jobs for our students. The core courses of this program include the "S" and "I" training requirements of the Forest Service. Students who complete the coursework receive college credit as well as the Forest Service certificates of completion. The courses are taught by the Forest Service personnel and when students leave the program, they are guaranteed employment with the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and/or the Parks and Recreation. | Scheduled for March, 2015 | Scheduled for April, 2013 |
| N.M. State Department of Transportation | The New Mexico Transportation Department received a grant, Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP), to provide training for city, county, state and tribal agency employees who are employed in a transportation maintenance-related field. A contract has been established between the College and the Department of Transportation to set up classes for the various agencies. There are approximately twenty-eight (28) courses approved to be delivered by Northern to all local public agencies. The grant reimburses the College for the students' registration costs, college administrative costs, and supplies. | Santa Clara Pueblo Forestry | The College provides courses in the Wildland Fire Science program, computer courses, and CPA/First Aid to the employees of the Santa Clara Pueblo Forestry division. | Rio Arriba County Detention Center | A collaborative project for NNMC to develop educational programs (GED/ABE/vocational training) for inmates of the Rio Arriba County Detention Center located in rural-most Rio Arriba County will serve 140 inmates. The Detention Center is a high security prison. A US Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Hispanic Serving Institutions three-year grant of $600,000 was secured to fund the initiatives in the project. | Chama Cumbres Toltec Railroad | A MOU has been developed with Chama Cumbres Toltec Railroad to develop a training program in Steam Engine and Locomotive Machining Repair training for Cumbres Toltec Railroad technicians and other interested (Chama) residents. NNMC received a grant of machining equipment for this initiative from the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The equipment will be used to support the training. A certificate and an associate of applied degree science degree are being developed in Locomotive Steam Engine Machining which will be offered by the College in the Chama (northernmost) district. Cumbres Toltec Railroad is retrofitting a building to house the training program near the railroad. The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is the finest and most spectacular example of a steam era mountain railroading in North America. Its equipment, structures and vast landscape exist today as if frozen in the first half of the twentieth century. The steam locomotives carry visitors over high trestles, through tunnels, and along narrow shelves above incredible gores. | Regional Technology Education Assistance Grant (RETA) | Area school districts K-12 teacher training in the use of integrating of technology into curriculum is provided by NNMC’s RETA grant. | Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) | A collaborative project with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) will provide science research internship opportunities for NNMC Science students, mentored by LANL scientists. Student internships are provided with support from a three-year National Science Foundation grant to NNMC for Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). The project is known as NNMC’s Pipeline for Undergraduate Student Horizons (PUSH) Program. Minority science students are placed in paid science research internships at LANL for the purpose of preparing minority students for scientific careers. | New Mexico Highlands University; New Mexico State University; Santa Fe Community College | A Kellogg Foundation Engaging Latino Communities for Education (ENLACE) grant initiative that includes a consortium of New Mexico higher education systems, i.e. New Mexico Highlands University, New Mexico State University, and Santa Fe Community College, ENLACE staff are working with Espanola junior and senior high school Hispanic students to improve their academic performance in preparation to direct them into college. These students are considered “at promise” not the high performing or the low performing but those on “the borderline”. The consortium researched “best practices” and choose to utilize the AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) training program as the basis for the ENLACE initiative. Training on AVID resources is provided to faculty in the schools, and students participate in an AVID class along with other activities.
